It is who Dan Millman is dropping off of the ledge of the building in The Peaceful Warrior. We are afraid of the "Authentic Self" ( the authentic self and the clown are synonymous ) because we know that our authentic self contains the "ass#*&% ". There is no escaping the " ass#*&% " !!! It is the black dot in the white half of the yin and yang. We want everything perfect ! The perfect, job, the perfect life, the perfect spouse, the perfect kids, the perfect party or meal. IT IS FANTASY !!! And it is killing us ! Here is a quick story : Recently I got angry at someone. Metaphorically speaking, I punched this person in the nose. I couldn't stop myself. Then the "inner judge" kicked in telling me what an jerk I was. A monster ! I was becoming my father. All the rage and anger that ripped my family apart and left scars on all of us that have still not healed. After 45 minutes of this mental self-abuse I said out loud, in the car on Lebanon Mtn. " Enough ! Shut up !!! Maybe you have just broken an agreement. I will tell you what Pat; Give yourself 24 hours to let it sit and if you still feel like crap then apologize. Guess what Jason ? My mind shut up. It was amazing. And here is more magic : The next day I felt great !!! I am glad I punched that person in the nose ! That person is a bully and deserved a punch in the nose. I am glad I was the one who could punch that person in the nose. I realized that at 8 or 9 years old I made an agreement with myself to not get angry. To not become my father and destroy everything around me. Guess what happens when you try not to get angry for 30 years ???? You get incredibly angry !! Guess what happens when you try to not be an jerk ? You become the jerk !! Paradox ! Contradiction ! And here is more magic Jason : Now that I have allowed myself to tell someone they are being a jerk. Now that I have allowed myself the right to get angry. I will not get angry. In fact I cannot see that there is much to get angry about ever again. Perfect! Psychiatrists call it stuffing emotions and a few of them now believe ( as do I ) that if you do not run your anger all the way out you will never get back to joy ! The emotions keep moving like a wave pattern and we try to stop them; stop them ourselves or with anti depressants. Guess what ? We are supposed to have ups and downs. We are supposed to be depressed somedays. It is natural. It is only when we think that everyday is supposed to be wonderful and full of joy that we really suffer; because we are pursuing something unattainable. More fantasy. More perfection. Well, what the hell. I used to be a supreme asshole so the change to supreme egotist should be a nice change. Was it a change from within? I'll have to think about that. I think all of us worry that we are two people. The person we project and the person we conceal from everyone. The one people like and trust and love and the other the one who feels like an impostor afraid of what people will think if anyone learns who we really are. The big question is IF the person we project is good and we listen to that person and we act according to that good persons standards and guidelines does that not make us a good person? If we are to be judged shouldn't it be by our actions and not by our private thoughts/ fears? Who knows what secrets Mother Theresa held in her soul, who cares for that matter. She was a "saint" for what she did. For the things her projected "good person" told her to do. I'm no saint by any measure, but I do try to keep my inner asshole in check.
